China’s State Visit to Cambodia

Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded his Southeast Asia tour with a two-day visit to Cambodia, marking his first trip to the country since 2016. Welcomed by King Norodom Sihamoni and Cambodian leaders, Xi reaffirmed China's support for Cambodia’s strategic autonomy and national development.

This visit, held against the backdrop of rising trade tensions with the United States, served to further solidify the alliance between the two countries. Xi and Prime Minister Hun Manet oversaw the signing of 37 cooperation agreements in a wide range of areas, including trade, investment, education, healthcare, agriculture, tourism.

Cambodia, whose growth has been largely backed by Beijing, regards China as an essential economic partner. In 2024, China accounted for nearly 30 per cent of Cambodia’s foreign trade, totaling over USD 15 billion, largely in Beijing’s favor.

President Xi also positioned China as a stable and reliable partner amid newly announced tariffs by Donald Trump. Finally, although military cooperation — particularly around the Ream Naval Base — has raised concerns, Phnom Penh maintains that it remains open to all international partners.
